HELP OUT: Restore Historic HiPass Camp in Boulevard

Enhance HumanityOne's ability to serve the community by helping them restore Historic HiPass Camp. It will be a beautiful and functional space for spiritual retreats, educational workshops, and community gatherings. Volunteers will help preserve a piece of local history while transforming it into a hub for personal development and community engagement. Be part of a meaningful endeavor that promotes cultural preservation, spiritual growth, and community building. By volunteering, individuals will gain hands-on experience, learn new skills, and contribute to a project that fosters a sense of belonging and purpose.

Volunteers will focus on essential cleanup and fire prevention tasks, which include:

  • Trash Cleanup: Removing litter and debris from the 31 ½-acre property to restore its natural beauty and ensure a clean environment.

  • Brush Clearing: Cutting back overgrown vegetation to reduce fire risk and improve access throughout the camp.

  • Deadwood Removal: Collecting and bundling deadwood to prevent potential fire hazards and promote a safer landscape.

  • Bundling and Stacking: Organizing cleared brush and deadwood into manageable bundles for easy removal or use as firewood.

  • General Grounds Maintenance: Assisting with other tasks such as raking, sweeping, and maintaining pathways to keep the camp safe and welcoming.


Opportunity Requirements & Important Notes

  • Attire: For safety and comfort, volunteers are required to wear the following attire:

    • Sturdy, closed-toe shoes to protect feet from debris and provide stability on uneven terrain.

    • Work clothes that can get dirty and provide maximum comfort and freedom of movement

    • Long pants to protect legs from scratches, insect bites, and sun exposure.

    • Long-sleeved shirt to shield arms from brush, insects, and sunburn.

    • Hat or cap to provide shade and protection from the sun.

    • This opportunity takes place outdoors with little or no shade. 

  • Bring: Plenty of water and lunch/snacks. Work gloves to protect hands while handling tools, debris, and vegetation. Sunscreen and insect repellent recommended for personal comfort and protection from the elements. Safety goggles are recommended for tasks involving cutting or handling materials that could cause eye injury.

  • Physical Requirements: Volunteers should be able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 30 pounds, including debris, deadwood, and tools. Volunteers will need to walk across uneven terrain and stand for extended periods. Ability to use hand tools such as pruners, rakes, and shovels effectively. Volunteers should be comfortable bending, stooping, and kneeling to pick up debris and perform ground-level tasks. Ability to pull and push tools and wheelbarrows loaded with debris or vegetation. Comfort working outdoors in varying weather conditions, including sun exposure and potential heat. Unfortunately this opportunity is not able to make accommodations for individuals with physical limitations and the space where this project takes place is not wheelchair accessible.

  • Waiver: Volunteers will be asked to fill out and sign the HumanityOne Volunteer Waiver. The waiver can be filled out in advance or on site. 

  • Weather: Volunteer activities will be delayed, canceled, or modified if any of the following weather conditions are present or forecasted and volunteers will be notified 24 hours in advance: severe thunderstorms (lightning, high winds, heavy rain), extreme heat (heat index above 100°F), extreme cold (wind chill below 32°F), heavy snowfall or ice accumulation, tornado warnings or watches, or flash flood warnings.

  • Location: This volunteer opportunty is located in Boulevard, CA which is located 65 miles east or over 1 hour from downtown San Diego.
