VIRTUAL: Tutor Children Experiencing Homelessness



Are you passionate about education? Become a volunteer tutor today and help a child experiencing homelessness reach their learning goals. Just one hour a week of either virtual or in-person tutoring makes a big difference for a student. After completing the application process, you will be matched with a child or youth based on your availability and tutoring skillset. 

School on Wheels volunteers provide free tutoring and mentoring to children from kindergarten through twelfth grade living in shelters, motels, vehicles, group foster homes, and the streets of Southern California. All tutoring sessions are currently virtual; reliable internet and video/audio capabilities are required. Schools on Wheels provides in-depth training and ongoing support to all their tutors.


Opportunity Requirements & Important Notes

  • Time Commitment: 1 hour per week for a minimum of 1 year. Tutoring usually takes place on weekdays, 3:00pm - 7:00pm. 

  • Onboarding Process: Fill out the volunteer application (select "other" region for San Diego), provide 2 non-family references, (name/phone/email), complete a background check, and attend orientation and training.

  • Desired Skills/Experience: Experience working with children and/or youth or a willingness to learn, tutoring or teaching experience, and/or experience providing special education. Volunteers who are bilingual in Spanish, Russian, or American Sign Lanaguage.

Since 1993, the mission of School on Wheels has never wavered: to enhance educational opportunities for children who are experiencing homelessness from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Their goal is to shrink the gaps in their learning and provide them with the highest level of education possible. Their program serves as a consistent support system for our students during a time of great stress and fear.
