Our Journey
In Their Own Words
Partnering with HandsOn San Diego at the San Diego Rescue Mission was so easy. It's fantastic having HandsOn help us on Sunday afternoons. Sundays are a time when regular Rescue Mission volunteers don't want to come in and volunteer. Knowing Sunday dinner is covered all year is amazing. Some HandsOn volunteers come back over and over again, there are great Team Leaders, and we get to introduce new volunteers to the Rescue Mission. Deborah Krakauer |
I became a Team Leader because I recognized the importance of volunteers to an organization. However, I also recognized how much more work goes into that, being the liaison between the project and the organization, making sure things run smoothly, and making sure the volunteers have somebody they can contact once they're at the project. There's only so much the organization can do but they need eyes and ears in the field during a project and I see the importance of that. I was going to be at the project anyway so I decided I might as well be a Team Leader. Nancy Trejo |
What motivates me to volunteer is kind of selfish - because you feel good when you're there. You feel good helping. I remember one of my first HandsOn San Diego opportunities with Father Joe's - they're really grateful because these are people who are invisble on the street and you're talking to them. Seems like they get more out of that interaction than the plate they have in front of them. Christopher Weston |
